To celebrate ANZAC day, our class read a true story that happened during World War 1. Stewart was a stretcher bearer and a New zealand soldier. The first world war lasted four years. It started in 1914 and ended in 1918. Around 18,000 soldiers died and some 40,000 injured. One day Stewart was walking along then he saw a tortoise walking on the tracks, he was horrified to see a tortoise being run over by a gun carriage. Luckily the tortoise survived but lost a few toes and a bit of her shell. Stewart rescued the tortoise and he named her Torty. After the war, Stewart returned to New Zealand and brought Torty with him as she was in hibernation. The journey to New Zealand took five months.
This is my drawing of Torty.
